Dear Friend,

The declaration of the Passover Seder dinner, “Let all who are hungry come and eat,” is a powerful call for inclusion. It’s an invitation for all who wish to be a part of our celebration to gather around a table together, eat, drink, discuss, and reflect. As Passover approaches, we are excited to share with you all that is happening at JBI in the spirit of inclusion, community, and the upcoming holidays.

In this letter you'll find news about:
  • Free accessible Haggadot and Megillot
    • Deadline for ordering Haggadot is April 11.
  • Free accessible Purim and Passover children's books
  • JBI's virtual book groups
  • Joining the JBI Patrons' Council
  • Special virtual program: "The story of Goldie, a blind history worker in the 19th century" with historian Peggy Chong

Order Your Passover and Purim Books

As always, JBI offers a wealth of free, accessible Megillot and Haggadot in all formats for Purim and Passover. We're especially excited about the new braille (over print) and audio children’s books we have for families to share, including "Kayla and Kugel’s Almost Perfect Passover" by Ann D. Koffsky (in audio and braille). Deadline for ordering Haggadot is April 11. Please call 1-800-999-6476 or email haggadah@jbilibrary.org.

Join Historian Peggy Chong for a virtual conversation

JBI is thrilled to announce a wonderful virtual conversation with Peggy Chong, a historian who will be sharing the story of Goldie, a blind worker from the end of the 19th century. For more than three decades, Chong has documented stories about blind people on her website theblindhistorylady.com, where she seeks to preserve the often-overlooked stories of individuals throughout U.S. history who were blind and thrived in their communities. Join us May 29 at 4:00 pm ET, via Zoom; registration required. Register online here or call Sabrina Blackwell at 212-812-2772.

Book Lovers Rejoice! JBI Book Clubs Are Here

Join us for great reads and great conversation. We are still taking names for our virtual book groups. Please contact JBI Librarian Arlene Arfe to sign up at aarfe@jbilibrary.org or 1-800-433-1531.

We Need Your Voice! Join the JBI Patrons' Council

As we continue to develop virtual and in-person programming, including special programs in September in preparation for the High Holy Days (Rosh Hashanah begins on October 2nd), we're requesting your input on how to make JBI events and programming the best they can be. Are you interested? Our Patrons' Council meets four times a year and provides JBI with important patron feedback. Please contact JBI Librarian Arlene Arfe to join at aarfe@jbilibrary.org or 1-800-433-1531.

New Picks From the JBI Library

We have been working hard to record new books, including poetry, fiction, and history. Here are just a few of our featured favorites:

  • "The New Crowd: The Changing of the Jewish Guard on Wall Street" by Judith Ramsey Ehrlich and Barry J. Rehfeld
  • "Let There Be Laughter: A Treasury of Great Jewish Humor and What It All Means" by Michael Krasny
  • "Just Human: The Quest for Disability Wisdom, Respect, and Inclusion" by Arielle Silverman
Please let us know if there are titles that you would like us to record as audio books. (Please note—we only adapt titles that are not otherwise available from NLS or a commercial site.)

Best wishes for a Chag Purim Sameach, and a joyful spring. We are always happy to hear from you.

Sincerely,
