New To JBI Library: Image-Described Graphic Novels
Let There Be Light: JBI Library Launches Its First Audio-Described Graphic Novel
At JBI Library, we believe that no one should be excluded from the ongoing conversation of Jewish life. Whether it’s a sacred text passed down through generations or a modern graphic novel, our mission is to ensure that our community’s stories are accessible to everyone.
Today, we are thrilled to announce a major milestone: the release of our first-ever audio-described graphic novel, “Let There Be Light: The Real Story of Her Creation” by the acclaimed cartoonist Liana Finck.
Removing Barriers to a Visual Genre
Graphic novels are a vital part of the modern Jewish cultural landscape, yet they have often been inaccessible to our community. By providing image description, readers who are blind, have low vision, or have print disabilities can fully engage with this vibrant genre of Jewish storytelling.
“Let There Be Light” features an audio description track written exclusively for JBI. It is a multi-voice book with three narrators and sound effects. We have also created a braille version that includes written image descriptions for those who prefer the hardcopy reading experience of imagining the voices themselves but want the full illustrative effect.
Engaging a New Generation
This project underscores JBI’s dedicated effort to diversify its catalog and ensure its patrons—regardless of age or level of vision—have access to the same diverse literary trends as their sighted peers.
By introducing accessible graphic novels, we are intentionally expanding our reach to a younger audience that thrives on this contemporary format.
Our goal is to provide a collection that represents a wide range of reading interests. From our foundational texts to the latest graphic narratives, we want our patrons to have equitable access to the full spectrum of Jewish creativity and thought.
Work is already underway on the next accessible graphic novel being added to JBI’s collection, “Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword” by Barry Deutsch.
Join Us in Spreading the Word
We invite everyone—educators, rabbis, disability advocates, and anyone passionate about accessibility to Jewish culture—to help us share this new resource.
