Help JBI Library Spread the Warmth of the Chanukah Season!
JBI Library wants your help to share the joy of Chanukah by sending our library members braille and large print cards, lovingly decorated with tactile, touchable art!
By participating, you’ll give someone not only the joy of receiving a card, but also the sense of connection that comes from knowing that a caring community is thinking of them.
Getting involved is easy—JBI will provide the cards; all your group needs to do is decorate them.
I wanted to extend my heartfelt thanks for the beautiful, tactile Chanukah card which I received today... It is so much more meaningful to me, a blind person, to receive a card that I can truly appreciate, both for the Braille inscription and the fact that the picture/design is tactile. Thank you to the library and all the others who responded to this "reach-out".

How it works

Fill out our form to let us know how many cards your group would like to decorate. Cards can be decorated by children or adults – all are welcome!

Our team will send you cards with a braille and large print Chanukah message inside. Your group will have a space to add your name and location to the card.

Your group will decorate the cards, using the list of suggested materials and art styles to ensure that our patrons can fully enjoy your creations (a great lesson on how to think about accessibility and art!)

Additional optional resources will be available to your community upon request including:
- Videos for kids and adults on how to create tactile, accessible art
- Handouts about the history of Hebrew Braille with a braille reading activity
- Full “Understanding By Design” format lesson plans for 3rd grade through high school (meant for groups in educational settings) to help teachers expand the project into a 45 minute lesson on creating inclusive Jewish community.

When you are done, your group packs the decorated cards in a box (so you don’t disturb your art or the braille embossing) and mail the completed cards back to JBI Library. We will take care of distributing them to our patrons across the world!

Cards are mailed to JBI patrons across the world in order to arrive before December 4, the first night of Chanukah!
JBI Library Provides
Chanukah cards in braille and large print to decorate
Video and written instructions on how to decorate the cards, including suggested crafts materials to use, easy ways to make raised-line tactile drawings, and other ideas
Optional age-based “Understanding By Design” format lesson plans for groups educational settings and handouts on the history of Hebrew braille and directions on how to read it
A “thank you” to your community in our newsletter and on our website
Brochures to distribute to your community members about JBI’s free services available to anyone who is blind, has low vision, or has a print disability that makes reading or holding a traditional print book difficult
A short blurb to include in your newsletter (if applicable) about this project and our free services
What We’re Asking You to Provide
Card artists young & old - No previous experience required! (For children below 3rd grade, we suggest an adult partner to work with them)
Tactile card decorating supplies (such as cardboard, felt, foam, or wooden shapes, puffy paint, stick-on gems, embroidery thread, yarn, etc.)
A voluntary donation to help cover the cost of producing and shipping the cards. It costs JBI Library approximately $1.25 per card to produce and ship each card to you to decorate. If you’re able, we would be grateful for a voluntary donation to help offset this cost and support the program. Donations can be made at https://jbilibrary.org/support-us/donate. Please note in the comments box that your donation is to help cover the cost of your Chanukah cards. Thank you for your support!
